Iona Beach Photowalk

One of my favorite Lower Mainland activities is walking at Iona Beach on Sea Island, during low tied. There’s a blog post or two about this in the archives, but its so photographic that I thought I’d blog about it again. While Jericho beach is nice its usually crowded. Iona on the other hand has far less people. The thing I love about it is you can walk as far as you want. Up to 20km if you desired. The spit goes all the way to the mouth of the Fraser river and acts as a breaker. On the other side you have the sewage tube that stretches for 5 km. On the other a jetty that protects the Fraser River waters. The result, a bay that almost completely drains at low tide and is very walkable.

I would not recmmend swimming in the area. But if your a hiker, its a great spot. Its one of the few places I know where you can be in the city while feeling like your not. The only indicator being the buzz of airplanes landing at YVR. Below are some photos from my 15km walk which was nearly to the end of UBC. Which you can see on the other side of the Fraser. There’s also lots of wildlife there. The last time I did an Iona Beach photowalk I saw Eagles. This time I got up close and personal with a crane. I think were friends now.

Steveston & Richmond Dyke Trails

Looking for a place to bike, walk or run? The Steveston & Richmond Dyke Trails are a great place to go. On a warm sunny day its a beautiful spot to take a stroll or bike ride. There’s usually a nice ocean breeze coming ashore, keeping a bit cooler.

Keep your eyes open, if you are lucky you will see Eagles along the dyke path, as well as Ducks, Turtles, and Snow Geese. It’s a marshland with a lot of variety, and great viewing for birders.

Olympic Torch arrived in Richmond Ozone

Richmond, BC, Feb 9th, 2010, Day 103 of The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

The torch hit Richmond Ozone in style tonight. It was a fantastic multicultural celebration. They included the Chinese New Year (Year of the Tiger) As part of the celebration. The year of the tiger is my year co-incidentally.

I am certain Ozone will be a great place to party this month. Though there were some crowd control issues at the end of the ceremony. I got boxed in behind the bleachers with a few hundred people. Lots of them were trying to push the way out.

Seems like Ozone may have let a few too many people in towards the end.
But other-wise it was a great time. I have too many pictures to post. Even took some video but will save that for tomorrow.

There are still two days to see left to see the torch relay. Including the Governor of California. Do I even need to say his name?

Update: I forgot to mention. They said that tonight’s crowd 15000 plus was the biggest on record. Way to go Richmond!

Steveston Fisherman’s Market Weekend Activities

Looking to escape the Olympic Craziness? Head out to Steveston Village during the Weekend. You can pick up a Pink Salmon to feed 3 for 5 dollars. They have other varieties of fresh fish available directly on the boats @ steveston dock.. Other things you can do include touring: The Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

There are several great places to get fish and chips while in Steveston. My all time favorite is Pajos Fish and Chips. They Have a dock in the Village and an Outlet at Garry Point. Winter hours are restricted but we were there Sunday February 7th and they were open on a cloudy & rainy day.
